Is There a Max Steam Level? XP Past Level 100 (2026)

Steam has no level cap. What it has instead is a curve that gets steeper every ten levels, and a few smaller caps that stop paying out long before the level does.

Our XP to level tool already lists the XP for every level from 1 to 100 and converts any level up to 1,000. This page starts where that chart thins out: what levels past 100 cost, which limits really exist, and what it takes to reach four digits. (If you're new to how levels work, the complete guide to leveling up on Steam starts at the beginning.)

Is there a maximum Steam level?

No. Valve publishes no maximum Steam level, and the XP formula has no ceiling built in. The real limit is games: normal card sets run out around level 1,176. Accounts above that, up to a reported record of about 6,022 in July 2026, were built on event badges, which have no craft limit.

Valve's own support page on levels gives a maximum for friends and a maximum for showcases. For the level itself, it gives none.

The games limit is plain arithmetic. A normal game badge crafts five times at most, so each game is worth 500 XP. The October 2026 Market data we use lists 13,966 games with trading cards, and five crafts of every one of them comes to 6,983,000 XP: level 1,176. Count a foil badge for every game as well and it stretches to about level 1,289, though a foil set costs many times a normal one. Either way, past that point there is nothing left to craft.

The only XP source without a craft limit is sale and event badges, which you can level again and again at 100 XP a time. That is how the top of the leaderboard got where it is, and it has nothing to do with card sets.

XP and card sets past level 100

The curve is simple. Levels 1 to 10 cost 100 XP each, levels 11 to 20 cost 200 each, and every ten levels after that a single level costs another 100 XP. At level 100, one level costs 1,000 XP, or 10 card sets. At level 1,000 it costs 10,000 XP, or 100 sets.

Because each level costs more than the one before it, the totals don't grow in a straight line. Ten times the level is nearly 92 times the XP.

Level Total XP Card sets That one level costs Fewest games
100 55,000 550 1,000 XP (10 sets) 110
150 120,000 1,200 1,500 XP (15 sets) 240
200 210,000 2,100 2,000 XP (20 sets) 420
250 325,000 3,250 2,500 XP (25 sets) 650
500 1,275,000 12,750 5,000 XP (50 sets) 2,550
1,000 5,050,000 50,500 10,000 XP (100 sets) 10,100
2,000 20,100,000 201,000 20,000 XP (200 sets) 40,200
5,000 125,250,000 1,252,500 50,000 XP (500 sets) 250,500

Total XP and card sets count from level 0. The fourth column is what the last step into that level costs. "Fewest games" is the set count divided by five, because a normal badge crafts five times at most. One set is one craft, and one craft is 100 XP, so card sets are always the XP divided by 100.

Look at the bottom two rows. Level 2,000 would need 40,200 different games and level 5,000 more than 250,000. There aren't that many games with cards on Steam. Level 10,000, which people do search for, works out at 500,500,000 XP, or 5,005,000 sets. That's roughly a hundred times level 1,000.

Valve has never published the curve. This is the commonly cited formula, and the one our calculator is built on. If you want the climb band by band, the level 100 breakdown walks through every bracket up to 100.

What stops at a cap even though the level doesn't

Three things a level gives you do have a ceiling, and all three arrive far sooner than any limit on the level would.

  • Showcases stop at 20, at level 200. You get one per ten levels, and Valve's support page calls 20 the maximum "at this time". A showcase bought on the Points Shop adds one more on top. Steam profile showcases has the count and the cost of every slot.
  • Friend slots stop at 2,000, at level 350. You start with 250 and gain five per level, so the list is full at 350. Levels after that add nothing to it.
  • Badge shapes stop at 6,100. The badge changes colour every 10 levels and shape every 100. The stylesheet Steam uses to draw level badges has a shape for each hundred up to 6,100 and none after it (checked 20 October 2026).

So past level 350, a level gives you a bigger number and a different badge. That's all. For scale, level 200 takes 2,100 sets from zero and level 350 takes 6,300.

Who is highest right now

The top account was reported at around level 6,022 in July 2026, held by 💢stasik💢, who overtook long-time leader St4ck; Guinness World Records lists St4ck's 4,574, verified in 2019. That left the leader less than a hundred levels short of the last badge shape, and how the record was built explains why almost none of it came from card sets.

What a four-digit level really costs

Level 1,000 is the number most people mean when they ask about huge levels, so here it is in full, starting from level 0:

Level 1,000 From level 0
XP 5,050,000
Card sets 50,500
Different games at least 10,100, each crafted five times
Card or PayPal $17,422.50 at $0.345 a set (October 2026)
TF2 keys 7,652 at 6.6 sets per key
Crafting time about 140 hours at roughly ten seconds a craft

The 10,100 games are 72% of every game with cards in that October data. That's the hard part, and it is why level 1,000 is close to the ceiling for card sets rather than a stop on the way to something bigger.

The money is lopsided too. The first 100 levels take 550 sets. The next 900 take 49,950. Near level 1,000 a single level is 100 sets, $34.50 at the October rate. The step from 99 to 100 is ten. What Steam levels cost, level by level prices every common target up to 250, which is where most people sensibly stop.

The crafting time is the part people forget. Every set is one press of the Craft button on your own account, and nobody can do that for you, because crafting is what grants the XP. At level 100 that's about an hour and a half. At level 1,000 it's three and a half working weeks.

Then there's supply. Whether anyone can sell you sets from ten thousand different games is a separate question from what they'd cost. Sign in with Steam and the level-up calculator shows the highest level our current stock can take your account to, which is the honest limit for bought sets. Keys and gems buy the same sets as dollars do, and cheap Steam leveling covers which currency comes out ahead.

No cap, then, but plenty of good places to stop. If you want the profile rather than the record, level 200 gets the last showcase and level 350 the last friend slot. Pick the level that gives you something you'll use, then see what it costs from where you are now. The sets arrive in a single trade offer, and the crafting is still yours.

XP figures come from the commonly cited Steam level formula, the same one behind our calculator. Prices are SteamLevelForge checkout rates as of October 2026. The game count is from the public steam.tools Steam Market dataset, October 2026. Record figures are as reported in July 2026; SteamDB and Steam Ladder track the live standings. Showcase and friend limits are from Steam Support's Steam Levels and XP page, read 20 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is the max Steam level?

There isn't one. Valve lists no maximum level, and the XP per level keeps rising with no cap. Card sets run out around level 1,176 because there aren't enough games with cards, and the highest account reported in July 2026 was around level 6,022, built on uncapped event badges.

How much XP is Steam level 1,000?

5,050,000 XP, which is 50,500 card sets crafted from level 0. At that point a single level costs 10,000 XP, or 100 sets. You'd need at least 10,100 different games, since a normal badge crafts five times at most.

Does the XP per level ever stop rising?

Not on the formula Steam levels follow. Every ten levels, one level costs another 100 XP, so the step into level 1,000 is 10,000 XP and the step into level 5,000 is 50,000. Valve doesn't publish the curve itself; this is the commonly cited formula and the one our calculator uses.

What happens to showcases after level 200?

You stop getting them. Twenty is the maximum Valve currently lists, reached at level 200, and a Points Shop showcase adds one slot on top. Levels past 200 still add five friend slots each until level 350, and the badge keeps changing.
