Buying card sets is the easy part. The step people miss is that cards sitting in your inventory are worth zero XP — Steam only awards experience when you turn a complete set into a badge.

How do you craft a Steam badge?
Open your Steam profile, click Badges, find the game showing "Ready" and press Craft Badge. You need every card in that game's set — Steam won't offer the button until you do. The craft consumes the cards and immediately awards 100 XP, a random emoticon, and a random profile background.
The exact steps
- Open Steam (client or browser) and go to your profile.
- Click Badges in the profile menu.
- Scroll to the game you have a complete set for. Steam shows a "Ready" / "Craft Badge" prompt on any set you can complete right now.
- Press Craft Badge.
- The cards vanish from your inventory, the badge appears on your profile, and your XP goes up by 100.

There's no confirmation dialog worth fearing here and nothing to undo — crafting is the intended use of the cards.
What you get for each craft
Every single craft, regardless of game, awards:
- 100 XP toward your Steam level
- One random emoticon for that game
- One random profile background for that game
- A chance — not a guarantee — at a discount coupon for another game or DLC
The XP is the constant. A set from an obscure indie game grants exactly as much as one from a major release, which is why cost-per-set is the only number that matters when you're leveling deliberately. How many card sets you need for a given level works through that math.
The emoticons and backgrounds are a genuine bonus, though they're randomly drawn from that game's pool. If you want a specific background, buying it directly on the Market is usually cheaper than crafting repeatedly hoping for it.
Why badges stop at level 5
A normal game badge can be crafted five times. Badge levels 1 through 5, one complete set each, 100 XP per craft. After the fifth craft, that game is done as an XP source — a sixth set of the same game grants nothing toward your level.
This is the constraint that shapes any serious leveling plan:
- Maximum 500 XP from any single game
- Reaching level 100 needs 55,000 XP, so you need at least 110 different games
It's also why "just buy 550 sets" is harder than it sounds. Breadth of catalog matters more than depth — five sets each of 110 games, not 550 sets of whatever's cheapest.
Foil badges work differently
Foil cards form a separate set, and a foil badge is crafted once rather than five times. It also grants 100 XP.
Foils are far scarcer and priced much higher per set, so they're a poor route to levels even though the XP is identical. Craft foils you happen to own. Don't go shopping for them to level with.
Do I get the cards back?
No. Crafting consumes the cards permanently. You get the badge, XP, emoticon, and background in exchange.
That trade is worth understanding before you craft a set from an expensive game. A set worth $60 grants the same 100 XP as one worth $0.40 — so if you own a valuable set and your goal is levels rather than the badge art, selling it and buying cheap sets is strictly better value.
Common problems
"Ready to craft" isn't appearing. You're missing at least one card. Steam's Badges page shows exactly which. Duplicates don't count — you need each distinct card in the set.
The cards arrived but aren't in my badge progress. Give Steam a minute and refresh. Trade offers occasionally take a moment to reflect on the Badges page. If cards are visible in your inventory but not counted, they may be foil cards, which build the separate foil badge — how drops, sets and foils actually work covers the difference.
I crafted and my level didn't change. XP applies immediately, but a level only ticks over when you cross its threshold. Early levels cost 100 XP each, so one craft is one level. Past level 50, a single level takes six or more crafts.
