Foil cards are the rare variant of Steam trading cards, and they build their own badge. Crafting one is quick; deciding whether to is the real question, because the same 100 XP costs a fraction of the price as a normal set.
How do you craft a foil badge on Steam?
Collect every foil card in a game's set, open your Steam profile, click Badges, find that game and press Craft Badge under the foil badge. Steam only shows the button once the full foil set is in your inventory. The craft consumes the cards and awards 100 XP — and unlike a normal badge, a foil badge can be crafted only once.
That last line is the whole reason this page exists. A normal game badge can be crafted five times. A foil badge is a one-shot.
Foil cards vs normal cards
The two look similar on the Badges page and behave very differently underneath.

Two things follow from that table. The XP is identical — a foil badge is not worth more levels than a normal one. And the price is not identical at all, because foils are scarce and the market prices them that way.
The exact steps
- Check what you actually own. Open your inventory, filter to Steam trading cards, and look for cards marked Foil. They sit in the same inventory as normal cards but count toward a different badge.
- Open the game's badge page. Profile → Badges → find the game. Normal progress and foil progress show separately.
- Complete the foil set. Every foil card for that game, one of each. Foils trade like any other card, so trade offers and the Community Market both work — but read the next section before buying any.
- Press Craft Badge. Once the set is complete the button appears under the foil badge. The craft is immediate.
- Collect the reward. 100 XP, plus the usual badge-craft extras.
If you have crafted a normal badge before, nothing here will surprise you. The only difference is that the button does not come back afterwards.
Should you craft your foils or sell them?
Craft foils you happen to own. Never go shopping for them to level with. That rule is repeated across this site because it is where people lose money.
Here is the arithmetic. Take a game whose normal set sits at the median $0.73. If its foil set sells for ten times that — the low end of "often 10× or beyond" — crafting the foil badge costs around $7.30 for 100 XP. The same $7.30 buys roughly ten normal sets, which is 1,000 XP. Same money, ten times the levels.
That is why foils are excellent to sell and poor to level with. If foils drop for you, the sensible move is usually to sell them on the Market and put the proceeds into normal sets.
There is one honest exception. If a foil set is already complete in your inventory — you played the game, the drops happened, you never bought anything — then crafting it is free XP. Selling four or five foils one at a time for small amounts is often more effort than the 100 XP is worth. Craft it and move on.
What you get, and what you don't
A foil badge grants 100 XP, exactly once. It exists as its own badge on your profile, separate from the normal badge for the same game, which is why you can hold both.
What it does not do:
- It does not give more XP than a normal badge.
- It does not unlock a sixth craft of the normal badge. The two are independent.
- It cannot be crafted again with a second foil set. There is no level 2 foil badge.
If your plan is a specific Steam level, foils are a rounding error. Level 100 needs 550 sets' worth of crafts; the handful of foil badges a normal account accumulates changes that total by a few sets at most.
Common problems
The foil badge shows no progress even though I have foil cards. Foil cards build the foil badge only for their own game, and only when they are foils. Check the card's name — it will say Foil — and check it belongs to the game you are looking at.
I bought a foil card and it went into the wrong badge. Almost certainly it was a normal card with a similar name. Foil listings on the Market are marked; look for the word before you buy.
Craft Badge is not appearing. You are one card short. Steam does not show the button until every card in the foil set is present. Compare the badge page's card list against your inventory one by one.
