Why Is My Steam Trade on Hold? (And How to Stop It)

You accepted a trade, the items didn't arrive, and Steam is showing a date two weeks out. Nothing has gone wrong and nobody is scamming you.

This is Valve's escrow system, it's protecting your account, and there's exactly one way to avoid it.

Why is my Steam trade on hold?

Because your account doesn't have the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator active, or has had it for fewer than seven days. Without it, Steam holds incoming and outgoing items in escrow for up to 15 days. Enabling the authenticator and waiting out the seven-day activation period removes the hold from all future trades.

The rules, precisely

Three separate thresholds catch people out:

Condition Result
Steam Guard enabled less than 15 days Cannot trade at all
Mobile Authenticator not active Trades held up to 15 days
Mobile Authenticator active less than 7 days Trades held up to 15 days
Mobile Authenticator active 7+ days Trades complete immediately

So a brand-new account faces a wait before it can trade at all, and a fresh authenticator faces a further week before holds stop.

The fix

Install the Steam Mobile App, enable the Mobile Authenticator, and wait seven days. That's the whole solution. There is no way to expedite it, no support ticket that clears it, and no third party who can lift it.

If you're planning to buy anything β€” cards, skins, anything tradeable β€” set the authenticator up a week before you intend to trade. It's the single highest-value thing you can do for your Steam account regardless, because it's also the main defence against account theft.

Things that will not remove a hold

Worth stating plainly, because scammers exploit every one of these:

  • Being friends for a while. The old "friends for 1 year removes holds" rule was retired years ago. It no longer applies.
  • Contacting Steam Support. They cannot and will not lift escrow.
  • The other trader doing something. A hold is a property of your account security, not theirs.
  • Cancelling and re-sending. The new trade gets the same hold.
  • Any site or service offering to "remove" it. This does not exist. Anyone claiming otherwise is setting up a scam β€” and it will involve your credentials. How to spot that pattern.

Why Valve does this

Escrow exists because account theft used to be devastating and instant. An attacker with brief access could empty an inventory in seconds, and the items were gone.

With a 15-day hold, a theft becomes recoverable: the real owner notices, contacts Support, and the trade can be reversed before the items ever land. The Mobile Authenticator waives the hold because it proves the person trading physically holds the account's second factor.

It's genuinely protecting you. It's just badly timed for anyone who set it up the same day they wanted to buy something.

"The seller says it's sent but I have nothing"

Almost always escrow, and it's the most common support question in Steam trading.

Check the trade in your Steam client: Inventory β†’ Trade Offers β†’ Trade History. A held trade shows as accepted with a completion date in the future. The items exist, they're allocated to you, and they'll arrive on that date.

Nothing is lost and nothing needs chasing. If the trade shows as accepted with a future date, it is simply waiting.

How this affects a levelling order

If you order card sets and your account is held, the sequence still works β€” it just takes 15 days instead of a minute. The trade offer arrives, you accept it, and the cards land when escrow clears.

Our side completes normally: the offer is sent, your reservation held, the order tracked. The wait is entirely between Valve and your account's security settings.

Which is why it's worth checking before ordering rather than after. Our FAQ covers delivery timing, and the trade URL guide covers the other common pre-purchase blocker.

The short version

Enable the Mobile Authenticator. Wait seven days. Trade freely thereafter, forever.

Do it now rather than the day you want to buy something, and the problem never comes up.

See what your target level costs while you wait out the seven days.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Steam trade held for 15 days?

Your account doesn't have the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator enabled, or it's been active for fewer than seven days. Valve escrows trades in that case so a stolen account's items can be recovered before they're lost.

How do I remove a Steam trade hold?

Enable the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator in the Steam Mobile App and wait seven days. There is no other method β€” Steam Support cannot lift escrow, and no third-party service can either.

Does being friends on Steam remove the trade hold?

No. The old rule that a year of friendship waived holds was retired. Only the Mobile Authenticator, active for at least seven days, removes escrow.

Can I speed up a trade that's already on hold?

No. Once a trade is in escrow the countdown cannot be shortened, even if you enable the authenticator afterwards. The items are allocated to you and will arrive on the stated date.
